Living Alone: Expectations vs. Reality

Updated: Apr 12, 2020

Let's Begin!

Expectation: You place will be furnished and fabulous

Reality: Your place might not be Home & Decor Magazine ready yet. Most of your things might be from thrift shops or hand me downs from relatives and friends who want to help out.

Expectation: You will get cozy on the couch to read books and drink wine or a warm drink such as tea or coffee more often.

Reality: You'll only be reading a book for a class (if your in school) or just extremely bored. The people who probably will make time to read more will be people who already make that part of their life.

Expectation: You get up every morning and do yoga stretches.

Reality: You might end up just sleeping in or just going on social media/Netflix

Expectation: How will you get rid of a spider?!

Reality: Put your big girl/boy pants on because it's all up to you, and hit that thing with a shoe. Side note, I would recommend using Raid spray if you want to weaken it before killing it. (Be Warned. It can also irritate it so, use with caution. Trust me I know from personal experience)

Expectation: Chores are going to be a pain

Reality: You might end up dancing around in your undergarments (if any) with the stereo blazing or just you and and your headphones while you work. And you may even find that doing the dishes can feel quite therapeutic. Best of luck, to those who never had to do chores when living with your guardians.

Expectation: Go over to your parent's house to "grocery shop" and do laundry

Reality: Let's just say your very lucky if you can do that because you're on your own in with getting food and keeping clothes clean. In my case, I can't do that since both of my parents have passed on.

Expectation: You become an amazing cook by trying meal recipes from pinterest.

Reality: You master alternative ramen noodle meals and you become a regular at the 99 cent store.

Expectation: fully unpacked by the first night and everything is out the way you want to be. Plus, no fighting over shared space because it's all yours.

Reality: You might be living out of your suitcase for a day or two but, at least you get to take your time and put items where you want them to go. Unless, your an overachiever or don't have much to unpack then this one might be partially irrelevant.

Expectation: Finally get to decorate the way you want

Reality: Your place won't be decorated overnight. Definitely, expect delay if plan on starting new with everything. My advice for you is to take your time and enjoy the process. Be patient.

Expectation: Girls/Guys night in with pizza and wine

Reality: "Girls night in" are usually the best days!

Expectation: house warming party right away.

Reality: don't rush yourself because it will be a process. It's not necessary if your not there permanently.

Expectation: No fighting over the thermostat

Reality: You will love living in comfort but you will probably become frugal after seeing the electricity bill.

Expectation: pantry full of things your parents wouldn't let you have and of course your fav go-to's.

Reality: little to nothing in the pantry and possibly using your parents kitchen as a grocery store.

Expectation: You maintain a clean apartment/house with fresh flowers and fruits

Reality: Your stuck doing everything by yourself including bills since there's no one to split the costs.

Expectation: You will add plants and flowers to your place to bring some live to the place

Reality: You will end up purchasing a artificial plant and or/ flowers because you won't remember to water them.

Expectation: Fears are magnified such as spiders nearby and no one around to remove it or hearing something while in the shower alone

Reality: Every sound you hear that wasn't made by you will freak you out. If you were afraid of the dark, best wishes to you.

Expectation: You'll keep a light on all night because you're scared of the dark.

Reality: After seeing the electricity bill you become brave overtime because you know will be sleeping in the dark using your phone flashlight app.

Expectation: If you're 21 or over, you might hope to have a fridge with a pack of beers and a few select wines in the fridge

Reality: You will either have nothing in the fridge but alcohol and leftovers or you have everything but alcohol.

Expectation: You will become more independent and invincible

Reality: Something life threatening such as choking or worse death and realize no one is there to save or be with you.

Expectation: You'll always have something to do or somewhere to be and invite over anyone for anything

Reality: There will be days were you're going to just be extremely bored all of your friends are busy and refreshing your social media accounts and reading aren't enough.

Expectation: You don't have to share food because majority of the time it's a meal for one.

Reality: Majority of the time you fridge is empty.

Expectation: No waiting for to use the bathroom and you can leave the door open

Reality: You can even walk around half dressed or just not dressed if you wanted to. That is, until someone knocks at the door and you have a panic attack while trying to find something to put on quickly.

Expectation: Practice your singing skills to your favorite songs in the shower

Reality: True. Also, you will look forward to have a soothing bath because you will appreciate it after a hard days work.

Expectation: You will talk to yourself aloud

Reality: If you didn't before, you will now.
